About Finding Elijah

In 2017, director Yolonda Johnson-Young lost her 20 year old film student son, Elijah to suicide. Her pain and sadness fueled her to learn documentary filmmaking at Scribe Video Center.
Finding Elijah explores mental health and suicide prevention awareness, by introducing audiences to the creative brilliance of Elijah Johnson-Young, a young man with so much promise, yet beset with emotional struggles. Yolonda’s determined quest for answers after her son’s suicide, opens up the larger context of de-stigmatizing mental illness for young men, particularly young men of color, so that they will more readily seek support.
